More than a substitute: Digital camera monitor system ProViu Mirror enhances visibility and safety for commercial vehicles

AUMOVIO is offering its Digital Camera Monitor System for commercial vehicles as an off-the-shelf solution, saving customers long development cycles and investments. By replacing traditional wing mirrors with a modular system of high definition cameras and displays in the driver cabin, it offers a technologically advanced solution with numerous advantages over conventional mirrors.

AUMOVIO’s digital camera monitor system ProViu Mirror mitigates many of the weaknesses traditional wing mirrors struggle with: restricted or obstructed view, numerous blind spots, high noise levels and fuel consumption due to poor aerodynamics, increased maintenance costs due to exposure to blows or impacts etc. Available as both OE and retrofit solutions, the system replaces the traditional wing mirror with an indirect vision system based on individual cameras and high-definition (HD) displays fitted into the cabin of various vehicle types like trucks, buses or off-highway vehicles. Providing the driver with the effective visual range of class II and class IV wing mirrors and, optionally, class V and VI, ProViu Mirror is the first off-the-shelf one-camera system with a functional safety rating of ASIL B.

LVDS technology provides high-quality images

ProViu Mirror provides a real-time depiction of what is going on around the vehicle: the cameras are based on the LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) technology with a frame rate of 60 fps and an image latency of below 80ms, both significantly exceeding the values of 30fps and 200ms required by UN ECE Regulation No 46 (R46). The camera’s resolution of 3 megapixels ensures greater flexibility for different vehicles while the broadened field of view gives the driver the option to adjust the system to their own needs while still complyingwith the relevant regulations.

The optically bonded black-panel displays are available in 10.0, 12.3 or 14.5 inches with a resolution of 1920 x 720 (RGB) or 1280 x 720, depending on the mirror class. Their brightness reaches a minimum of 800 Cd/m while the contrast ratio is 1.000:1. With a flexible power supply (9 to 32V) and the small component size, ProViu Mirror can easily be integrated in various vehicles. Furthermore, AUMOVIO offers a configuration tool that helps install the system and sets it up optimally for each driving circumstance.

Modular system offers flexibility

With its platform approach, the ProViu Mirror offers various configurations for all kinds of commercial vehicles. By using the same hardware and software for different applications, OEMs do not incur additional R&D costs and retrofit customers profit from a cost-effective platform. The modular system can be individually configured for the various mirror classes dependingon the specific requirements. The following packages are possible:

  • Mirror classes II/IV: one camera mounted on each vehicle side; two monitors mounted on the inside
  • Mirror classes II/IV/V: one camera on the left, two cameras on the right vehicle side; three monitors on the inside with one additional monitor for mirror class V
  • Mirror classes II/IV/V/VI – option A: one camera on the left, two cameras on the right vehicle side and one camera at the front; three monitors with the additional one depicting class V & VI on a split screen
  • Mirror classes II/IV/V/VI – option B: one camera on the left, two cameras on the right side of the vehicle and one camera at the front; four monitors with one additional monitor each for class V and VI

Made for the future: Additional driver assistance functions can easily be integrated

ProViu Mirror already offers a multitude of functions that sets it apart from traditional wing mirrors and even other camera monitoring systems in the market. The STARVIS™ technology automatically brightens up the display based on the ambient brightness detected by light sensors. This is especially handy in bad weather and at nights when visibility is low anyway. In situations where strong lighting or backlights are blinding the driver, the High Dynamic Range technology is able to highlight bright and dark parts while still retaining all the details. The LFM LED Flicker Management function suppresses LED flicker and therefore ensures image clarity. Furthermore, the camera modules are equipped with a built-in lense heating to reduce the impact of rainy, icy and snowyenvironments on the image.

The high frame rate of the system also opens up the possibility of integrating additional advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) functions via the built-in CAN interface. The park assist, for example, extends the image when receiving a reverse signal and adds park assist lines to improve parking visibility. The turning assistance function automatically expands the field of vision on the turning side when receiving a turn signal and lights up the camera turn signal. It is also possible to transfer and display a BSIS warning to the ProViu Mirror system.
