From hardware provider to partner for new digital business models: the VDO ecosystem.

Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, March 25, 2026. AUMOVIO has further developed its digital fleet management system for commercial vehicles – VDO Fleet – into an open platform for digital fleet services. Vehicle fleet operators and fleet management providers as well as software and technology companies can access tachograph data via various interfaces and integrate this data directly into their systems or use the data for their own applications, such as payroll processing, time recording, or the optimization and automation of dispatching and route planning.

Our digital tachograph provides extremely reliable and legally compliant data. By making this data accessible via open interfaces, we are creating a flexible basis for extended data-based functions in transport logistics. In this way, we are evolving from being a hardware and service provider into a partner that enables third-party providers and fleets to access new digital business models in transport logistics.

What was once a control instrument becomes a data source – the tachograph as a data platform

The digital tachograph has been more than just a control instrument for quite some time. It delivers legally compliant, tamper-proof data on driving and rest periods, vehicle movements and driver activities. It is used not only for control purposes, but also increasingly for numerous additional applications such as dispatching, billing and personnel planning.

With VDO Fleet, AUMOVIO has merged these data systematically on a cloud platform in an analyzable format. By opening data up to partners such as software providers, platform operators and fleet management service providers, this data can now also be used outside of the company’s own software environment. Partners can access data records via standardized interfaces and use them as a basis for their own services. “The tachograph is one of the most reliable data sources onboard vehicles. Our aim is not only to harness this potential for our own services, but also to open it up specifically for partners,” says Volkmar Knaup. “We thereby create an ecosystem from which fleets, partners and their customers can all benefit equally. Initial collaborative efforts with partners have already been successfully launched.”

Various interface models to meet differing needs and requirements

The interface models of VDO Fleet cover a wide range of integration scenarios. For example, fleets and fleet management providers that already use their own in-house telematics solutions can securely transfer their tachograph data from an existing system to the VDO Fleet Cloud via a standardized interface. There, the data are available for all VDO Fleet services – regardless of the vehicle or telematics infrastructure used. In another use case, fleet operators can release selected tachograph data from the VDO Fleet Cloud via a secure interface to authorized third-party providers who, in turn, can integrate the vehicle and driver data into their own applications, such as wage and salary calculation systems or analysis tools. In doing so, the fleets always retain control, able to proactively decide which partners are allowed access to which data. One particularly attractive feature for efficient everyday fleet operations is the option to receive information near real time via a live interface, showing e.g. driver status, vehicle location and remaining driving times, and to integrate such data into external, i.e. their own in-house systems. This enables dispatching, route planning and compliance monitoring to be automated and specified in detail.

Collaboration with Samsara

One example of this platform approach is the collaboration with Samsara. As of March 2026, Samsara customers have direct access to their Connected Operations® Platform to analyze VDO Fleet data. Samsara utilizes the tachograph data analysis functions of the VDO Fleet Cloud and, with Smart Compliance, offers fleet managers an integrated platform that combines all aspects of tachograph compliance – from data queries and analysis of infringements right through to communication with the drivers. This cooperation emphasizes the VDO Fleet approach: the focus is not on the individual application, but rather on making reliable, rules-compliant data available all across Europe for various systems and markets.

Added value for partners and fleets

For fleet operators, the platform approach of VDO Fleet means that they can use new digital services without having to fundamentally change their existing system landscape. For software providers and platform operators, access is opened up to data that are standardized and legally compliant throughout Europe. They also have access to proven analysis functions, without which they themselves would have to dive deep into the regulatory details of European tachograph legislation. VDO Fleet is planning to expand its partnerships even more in the coming years: besides further integration into fleet management and telematics platforms, additional fields of application are to be opened up, such as for automated billing, international compliance processes, and data-based optimization of transport chains. VDO Fleet is thus positioning itself in the European commercial vehicle market as a central data platform geared to trustworthy, reliable tachograph data in a way that is scalable and consistent.
