HUD ARCreator

Augmented reality for safer driving.

The  HUD ARCreator  projects essential driving information directly onto the windshield into the driver’s line of sight, ensuring drivers keep their eyes on the road. By combining head-up display (HUD) technology with augmented reality (AR), ARCreator delivers real-time, context-aware guidance such as  

  

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Distance to vehicle ahead
  • Forward collision and blind spot warnings
  • Lane departure warnings
  • Navigation cues projected onto the road (3rd-party navigation required)
  • Object detection and road sign recognition
  • Current speed display

Augmentation graphics such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, navigation information, and object (pedestrian) detection, mirrored into the windshield right in the driver’s line of sight.

AUMOVIO’s ARCreator can be used with dual-plane, varifocal, and 3D AR HUD systems alike and includes a number of unique AUMOVIO innovations such as

  

  • Perspective correction, ensuring AR graphics remain perfectly aligned with real-world objects
  • Car motion compensation, an AUMOVIO-patented technology that stabilizes the vertical position of the displayed AR content when the car, for example, drives through a pothole or over a bump,
  • Warping algorithm, guaranteeing undistorted visuals on curved windshields

  

The ARCreator also encompasses ARStudio,a powerful software development tool for recording and replaying videos plus all relevant vehicle signals during test drives, for creating an OEM-specific look & feel by rendering customized 3D assets, all with a plug-in architecture to support a seamless HUD integration.

Warping

Perfect visual alignment on curved surfaces.

Projecting graphics onto a curved windshield without correction leads to visible distortion—straight lines appear bent, and circles become ovals. Due to the complex curvature of a car’s windscreen, this cannot be fully resolved through optics alone.

  

AUMOVIO’s Warping Algorithm used in the ARCreator, but also available as a stand-alone solution, solves this challenge with a proprietary warping algorithm. The algorithm pre-distorts the image before projection so that, when mirrored onto the curved surface, the augmentation graphics appear perfectly undistorted to the driver. Straight lines remain straight, and circles retain their true shape—ensuring a natural, accurate visual experience.

Video AR

Augmentation without HUD hardware.

With the VideoAR solution, AUMOVIO also offers a solution for when no HUD is available in the vehicle.

  

Video AR displays a wide horizontal-view video on the center display, based on a live camera feed from the front-facing camera, and superimposes the augmentation information on top of this video image.

  

So, Video AR is a viable alternative when an actual AR HUD is, for various reasons, not an option.

With the VideoAR solution, AUMOVIO also offers a solution for when no HUD is available in the vehicle. Video AR displays a wide horizontal-view video on the center display, based on a live camera feed from the front-facing camera, and superimposes the augmentation information on top of this video image.

Virtual 3D Environment View

Intuitive traffic visualization.

AUMOVIO’s Virtual 3D Environment View provides a high-definition rendering of the surrounding traffic environment, including other vehicles around the driver’s own car (so-called »ego car«), using sensor fusion (camera, radar, GPS) and HD maps, supporting the driver with a good overview in complex driving situations.
